An Insurance Agent Had No Idea Pennsylvania Let Abortions Go This Late

A twenty-two-year-old insurance agent thought abortion was a gray area.

One fact from a pro-life advocate changed his mind in minutes.

He had no idea what Pennsylvania law actually allowed.

Pennsylvania Allows Abortion Up to 24 Weeks of Pregnancy

Maria Gallagher works for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation.

Over the weekend, she and her sister met with an insurance agent.

He mentioned that abortion was not a black-or-white issue to him.

He brought up saving the life of the mother, so Gallagher gave him the real numbers.

Pro-life laws already carry exceptions for the mother's life, and those cases make up only a small fraction of abortions performed.

Then she told him the part that actually changed his mind.

Pennsylvania draws the line at 24 weeks of pregnancy, long after many of these babies are capable of surviving being born.

The life-of-the-mother exception is not the only door left wide open, either.

Pennsylvania law also allows abortion for "substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function," a phrase broad enough to cover far more than the emergencies most people picture when they hear "life of the mother."

The insurance agent was shocked.

Whatever cutoff he had pictured in his head, six months into a pregnancy was not it.

A Baby Born at 21 Weeks Is Alive Today

Twenty-four weeks is not some medical cutoff where survival becomes possible.

Curtis Zy-Keith Means was born at 21 weeks and one day, and he is alive today.

Doctors and researchers publishing in the Journal of Pediatrics and the New England Journal of Medicine have confirmed premature babies can survive with the right intensive care, sometimes weeks before Pennsylvania's legal deadline even starts.

America is already an outlier on this.

The United States is one of only a handful of nations on earth that allows abortion beyond 15 weeks at all.

Gallagher did not just recite the law to the insurance agent.

She sent him a video showing a baby's development in the womb.

He was amazed enough to save it to his phone.

By the time they finished talking, he had come around to the pro-life side.

Most Americans Want Abortion Limited to the First Trimester

A Knights of Columbus and Marist poll found that 57 percent of Americans want abortion limited to the first three months of pregnancy at most.

Eighty-eight percent said the law can protect both a mother and her unborn child at the same time.

Eighty-four percent support pregnancy centers that help mothers during and after pregnancy, which tells you Americans are not looking for fewer options for women, just fewer abortions this late.

Pennsylvania's line sits nearly six months past where most of the country wants it drawn.

That gap is not because Americans secretly support late-term abortion.

It survives because most of them have never had the conversation that insurance agent had this weekend, and because Pennsylvania's elected officials keep working to protect the current law, not narrow it.

Three Pennsylvania House Democrats, Danielle Friel Otten, Liz Hanbidge, and La'Tasha Mayes, wrote a constitutional amendment that passed the state House 102 to 101 this year, and it does not lower the 24-week line by a single day.

Governor Josh Shapiro spent this year in court fighting to keep abortion pills flowing through the mail, not fighting to move that line closer to where most Pennsylvanians actually want it.

None of this took a debate stage or a viral moment.

She needed five minutes, one accurate fact about Pennsylvania's actual law, and a video any parent could understand.

Every pro-life American has that same five minutes available to them today.
