When a pregnant mom was told her baby had no chance of surviving past birth – she was devastated.
Doctors had no hope – so the mom began to grieve the loss of her precious baby.
But despite her grief, this mom pressed on and was determined to have her baby – and when she did – the medical world was stunned.
A pregnant mom received the ultimate shock
Andi Mahoney was 20 weeks pregnant when she heard the devastating news – her unborn daughter Emmie had a life-threatening condition and would die upon birth.
Emmie was diagnosed with bilateral renal agenesis – which meant she didn’t have any kidneys.
And according to doctors – there was nothing that could be done.
“It’s universally fatal,” Andi told 11 Alive.
“So, we grieved. We thought we were losing our baby, and we were told that there’s no hope,” she continued.
But she still refused to give up hope.
Praying for a miracle
Andi refused to sit back and do nothing – so she began the daunting search of looking for a specialist to help her.
Finally, she found one six hours away, and began traveling to receive an infusion of fluids that would increase Emmie’s chance at surviving, reported Live Action.
But then while she was 34 weeks pregnant – Andi experienced a severe complication.
“My baby needed fluid to breathe. By the time I got to the 34-week mark, I had an unnatural rupture,” Andi recalled.
She knew it was life or death – and she needed to act quick.
A miracle delivery
Andi found a hospital in California that had experience with her baby’s diagnosis and helping mothers deliver.
She hopped on a plane from Jacksonville, Florida and headed to California – determined to save her baby girl.
Despite a few unsettling moments and close calls, Andi gave birth to Emmie, and she survived!
Doctors at this California hospital had hope – but let Andi know Emmie needed a kidney and but couldn’t get it until she was 6 months old, USA Today reported.
Thankfully, Andi was a match for her daughter.
“I received the best news of my life when I found out we had matching blood types and that I was approved for the surgery,” Andi told USA Today.
She continued “I didn’t think twice. I knew I was giving my kidney to Emmie.”
A thriving toddler
Although doctors gave her a death sentence, Emmie is now 2 years old and thriving.
Andi joyfully said “She’s just spreading light and joy and happiness. And I know she’s supposed to be here. She’s my little miracle. She’s amazing.”
Despite the negative outlook, Andi was willing to take all of the hard steps necessary to bring her baby into the world and give her a chance at life.
And thanks to the faithful love of her mother, Emmie can now grow up knowing her mother never gave up hope.
