Ever since Dobbs in June 2022, abortion activists have warned that women in pro-life states would be left to bleed out.
Then an Idaho mother of four started hemorrhaging in her second trimester and put that claim to the test.
What her doctors did next is exactly what Prop 1 supporters swear Idaho law forbids.
Placental Abruption at 18 Weeks Treated Without Abortion in Idaho
Valerie Abraham was expecting her fifth child.
One day earlier, she and her husband had surprised the family with the news that it was a girl.
The next night, she was at an emergency room registration desk, losing blood fast and badly understating it.
The staff saw through her calm and moved quickly.
Before long she was in a trauma bay, with nurses placing a second IV to prepare for a massive transfusion.
The diagnosis was placental abruption, the placenta tearing away from the uterine wall, just shy of 18 weeks.
Her doctors stood ready to escalate, but they didn't reach for the most drastic option first.
They followed standard ACOG treatment guidelines, stabilized her, and kept her updated on her baby's chances as things changed by the hour.
When preterm labor set in, they stepped up the care to stop the bleeding.
Valerie says she got the very medications abortion advocates claim women in states like Idaho can't get.
Baby Amal Lived 43 Minutes and Held Her Father's Hand
Valerie delivered a tiny daughter whose little fingers found her father's hand and held on.
She lived 43 minutes.
Her family cradled her and prayed with her through every one of those minutes.
They named her Amal, after a great aunt.
Her birth certificate and death certificate carry the same date.
"Amal died with dignity instead of trauma because of Idaho's current laws," Valerie wrote in Live Action News.
Valerie walked out of that hospital alive, and she credits the same laws for the care that saved her.
She isn't guessing about medicine either – she's married to a trauma surgeon who handles life-or-death emergencies for a living.
Idaho Prop 1 Would Allow Late-Term Abortion Without Parental Consent
Valerie went public with her story because Prop 1 is on Idaho's November 3 ballot.
Supporters are selling it as emergency care for moms like her.
It isn't.
According to Focus on the Family's Daily Citizen, Prop 1 creates a statutory right to abortion for any reason up to viability, a line left to the abortionist's own judgment.
Boise Bishop Peter Christensen warns it would "legalize late-term abortions into the third trimester."
He adds that it would let minors get abortions without parental consent and strip the rule that only physicians can perform them.
Meanwhile, Idaho's current law already protects mothers in crisis.
In Adkins v. State of Idaho, Judge Jason Scott ruled in April 2025 that doctors may act when a woman faces a "non-negligible risk of dying sooner," even if death isn't imminent.
Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador said the ruling confirmed the state's laws "protect both unborn children and their mothers."
Dr. Stacy Seyb Never Read the Idaho Abortion Law He Sued Over
So where do the horror stories come from?
Look at Dr. Stacy Seyb, the Idaho physician who sued to weaken Idaho's Defense of Life Act.
According to Labrador's office, Seyb admitted under oath that he arranged emergency flights to send pregnant women out of state.
He also admitted he had never read the statute itself.
Valerie says doctors like that cast themselves as tragic heroes while abandoning their professional duty.
As Labrador's office tells it, the law didn't put those women on airplanes – a doctor who failed to understand it did.
Missouri Amendment 3 Shows Where Idaho Prop 1 Leads
Missouri voters fell for this exact pitch in November 2024, narrowly passing Amendment 3, which wiped out the state's pro-life trigger law and prompted lawmakers to send a repeal measure back to voters on the 2026 ballot.
Dr. Stacy Seyb owes Idaho mothers one thing before November 3 – read the Defense of Life Act cover to cover, then tell voters which line of it Valerie Abraham's doctors broke.
