Oregon Just Recorded Its Worst Year for Abortion Since Obama’s First Term

Oregon Right to Life says more than ten thousand unborn babies were lost to abortion in 2025.

Fewer people crossed state lines for an Oregon abortion in 2025 than in 2024, and the total still climbed.

A quieter, far more private method has taken the place of that trip across the state line.

Oregon Recorded 10,495 Abortions in 2025, the Most Since 2009

Oregon's health department just confirmed the state's abortion count for 2025.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 10,495 abortions performed in Oregon that year, trailing only the 10,801 recorded in 2009.

Lois Anderson, the executive director of Oregon Right to Life, said Oregonians cannot let a number that size become background noise.

"Last year, more than 10,000 innocent unborn lives were lost to abortion, the highest rate since 2009," Anderson said.

"In just the past ten years alone, abortion has now ended the lives of 96,623 unborn babies, babies who should today be known and loved in our community," Anderson said.

That is nearly twice as many people as Autzen Stadium holds at full capacity.

"When will Oregonians finally say, 'enough is enough'?" Anderson said. "We cannot become numb to this ongoing tragedy."

Late-Term Abortions and Abortion Tourism Both Fell in 2025

The report was not all bad news.

Late-term abortions, the ones performed at 23 weeks or later, fell from 284 in 2024 to 228 in 2025.

Out-of-state residents made up 13.8 percent of all Oregon abortions in 2025, down from a record 18.9 percent in 2024.

That is the first time the out-of-state share has dropped since 2021.

National data show the same pattern, interstate abortion travel fell nearly 8 percent from 2024 to 2025, even as the nationwide abortion count reached its highest level since 2009.

Michael New of the Charlotte Lozier Institute said the trend reflects real frustration inside the pro-life movement.

"These rising abortion numbers are an important reason why pro-lifers are frustrated with the Trump administration's lack of action on telehealth abortions," New said.

Kelsey Pritchard of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America put a monthly toll on it, roughly 15,000 unborn babies now die every month from mail-order abortion drugs shipped into states with pro-life laws.

Ontario, Oregon Abortions Collapsed but Idaho Proposition 1 Could Reverse It

Malheur County, on the Oregon-Idaho border, tells a different version of this story.

Planned Parenthood opened a clinic in Ontario, Oregon, just over the Idaho line, in 2023, specifically to catch women fleeing Idaho's total abortion ban.

Before that clinic opened, Malheur County recorded zero abortions in a typical year.

In 2024, the county recorded 876 abortions, nearly all of them for Idaho women crossing the border.

That number fell by more than half in 2025, down to 391.

But the out-of-state share barely moved, 90.3 percent of every abortion performed in Malheur County in 2025 was for an Idaho resident.

That dynamic could change fast.

Idaho voters will decide in November whether to pass Idaho Proposition 1, a ballot measure that would legalize nearly all abortions in the state, wiping out the very protections that send Idaho women across the border to Ontario in the first place.

Right to Life of Idaho President Emily Naugle called the measure "barbaric late-term abortion, a decimation of parental rights, and an open door for transgender ideologies to be foisted upon taxpayers."

Mail-Order Abortion Pills Are Quietly Replacing the Road Trip

Anderson has an answer for why the travel numbers keep dropping while the overall total keeps climbing, and it is not good news.

"Unfortunately, the prevalence of dangerous chemical abortion drugs is responsible for at least some of this change," Anderson said, "making it all the more important for pro-life advocates to address this increasingly popular method of ending the lives of the most vulnerable."

Women no longer need to drive to Ontario or fly into Portland, they can order the pills online and never leave home.

A federal safety review of those mail-order pills is currently underway, and could restore the in-person requirements that used to make this so much harder.

Oregon Right to Life is not waiting on Washington, the group is expanding Abortion Pill Reversal outreach and pregnancy center resources in Malheur County to reach women before they ever place that order.

Every one of those numbers represents a ballot Oregonians will get to cast in November, and Anderson wants them to remember it.

"I hope every Oregonian will carry this information with them, and choose to elect leaders who will confront this daily violation of the right to life of the unborn," Anderson said.
