A&E’s Duck Dynasty burst onto the scene in 2012 and, to this day, despite the show ending in 2017, still enjoys a loyal following.
The show was the first of its kind centering around a family of unabashed Christians who didn’t shy away from their beliefs.
But now, this former Duck Dynasty star has shocked everyone with one giant leap of faith.
“I Understand What God Means when We are Adopted”
The Robertson family first became famous with their product “The Duck Commander” duck call, and then their reality TV show Duck Dynasty, which aired from 2012-2017.
The show centered around their lives and business in Shreveport, LA and the dynamics and drama of a family-owned business.
The Robertson family are unabashed patriots as well as conservative Evangelical Christians.
The show was a huge success, making millions of dollars and attracting an audience of over 11 million.
One of the brothers, Jep Robertson, and his wife Jessica were the parents of four. Jessica had always told her husband that she wanted five kids. After her fourth she was no longer able to have biological children.
She thought about adopting. While God placed this on her heart, her husband was not interested, he thought ‘we have four, I’m good.’ Still, Jessica began to look into the possibility of adopting a child.
Jep was skeptical of the idea until he went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic with his church and was working with an orphanage.
In an interview for Students for Life podcast Speak Out with Christin Yeargin, Jep actually said “I’m ready, I’m all in.”
You Don’t Just Adopt a Baby
They asked around for recommendations for an agency they could work with and an attorney they could trust.
Jep and Jessica opted for a closed adoption, meaning the birthparents no longer have contact with the baby or the adopted family.
They also chose to adopt domestically because they knew there were children in the US who needed homes.
Eventually the day arrived when the child God chose for them was born. Because of one courageous mother, the Robertsons were able to bring their new baby boy home just a few days after his birth.
Adoption Means Change
Jep and Jessica knew there would be challenges because the baby they adopted was of a different race.
While this was not a problem for the family, it did create some confusion with people outside the family from time to time and in school.
God has been faithful in this effort and the Robertson family hopes that by sharing their experience, mothers who have unplanned pregnancies can see the blessings the adopting families receive when the birth mother chooses life.
To help share their experience, strength and hope with others, Jep and Jessica have written a children’s book about adoption called, “Dear Valor” to teach about love, family bonds, and adoption.
Jep also said that the biggest thing he has learned through this experience is who he is in Christ as an adopted son into the Kingdom. He thought he understood it before, but his understanding has increased dramatically.
